Finding the Source of the Water

Most seepage enters where the wall sits on the slab, since water gathering at the footing reaches that seam first. Window wells packed with leaves or drifted snow, worn mortar joints in older stone and block walls, and gaps around pipes come next, and spring melt from snow heaped against the foundation can feed any of them.

Two local storms show the range. In April 2017, about 1.5 inches of rain landed on melting snow; RochesterFirst described one sump pump cycling about every 30 seconds and a plumbing company seeing wet basements across the city. In August 2023, 3 to 5 inches fell within hours, hitting Rochester and several nearby towns hard, and where storm drains could not keep up, sewage came back into some homes (RochesterFirst).

That storm mixed two different problems. Water pressing through a wall or the floor joint calls for waterproofing; water rising out of a floor drain points to the sewer. Inside the City of Rochester, storm runoff and sewage share combined pipes, so a hard rain can push both back toward basements. When a City address or a home in Chili, NY has a backup, report it to Monroe County Pure Waters (585-753-7600, option 1), which dispatches a crew.

Pipes inside the house are the owner's to maintain, and the County says a plumber can clear most causes. When a plumber suspects the main, or the lateral beyond the lot-line clean-out toward the street, Pure Waters is the one to contact. For City homes, the County suggests capped floor drains plus check valves, gate valves, standpipes or floor-drain plugs, fitted by a licensed plumber. That is plumbing for a licensed master plumber with a permit, apart from any waterproofing job.

Town sewers belong to the town. In Irondequoit, NY, reach the Town DPW (585-336-6090); in Henrietta, NY, the Sewer Department (585-359-7005); in Penfield, NY, the sewer office (585-340-8710); in Greece, NY, the Department of Public Works. If a basement ever floods, the County's advice is to stay out and contact the fire department.

What This Covers

  • Water along the base of one wall. A short run of interior drain feeding a sump is a common answer.
  • One crack that seeps. Often sealed from the inside, with no digging.
  • A window well that fills every thaw. Clearing its drain, adding a cover and resealing the frame are usual fixes.
  • A water mark that spreads with every storm. Better seen by a contractor before the next wet spell.
  • Powdery white residue on the masonry. Mineral salts left behind as moisture moves through the wall.

Costs to Expect

Cost rowFigureSource (year)
Typical basement waterproofing projectabout $3,000 to $10,000 (average about $5,000)Fixr national (2026)
Interior perimeter drain, per linear foot$40 to $120Fixr national (2026)
Sump pump installation$600 to $2,500Fixr national (2026)
Epoxy crack injection, per crack$250 to $1,000Fixr national (2026)
Waterproof paint or sealant, per sq ft$1 to $8Fixr national (2026)

One entry point usually lines up with a single row; several wet walls push the total toward the project range. Fixr published these as 2026 national figures, so they are neither New York numbers nor this site's prices. A check valve or similar plumbing gets its own price from a licensed master plumber. The cost guide goes further.

What Happens on Job Day

  1. Pinning down the entry point. Expect the contractor to check the wall, floor seam, window wells, downspouts and outside grade first.
  2. The repair. That may mean injecting a crack, repointing a joint, rebuilding a window-well drain or cutting a short drain run to a sump.
  3. Outside touches. Downspout extensions or regrading often come with it.
  4. Your follow-up. After the next soaking rain or thaw, check the spot again.

A Simpler Way to Compare

Your request goes to just one independent local contractor, who sets up any visit with you and puts the repair price on paper. This site only refers and advertises, holds no contractor or trade license, and never inspects, quotes or repairs anything. A contractor may pay it a flat advertising fee; you neither pay it nor get anything from it.

Coverage Basics for Wet Basements

Monroe County points out that most homeowner policies leave out sewer-backup damage. Ask your insurance agent whether a sewer-backup rider is available, and read what your own policy says about water from outside the house. Coverage questions go to your agent or insurer; this site plays no part in insurance.

What People Ask First

Why does only one wall get wet?

Water collects wherever something sends it: a downspout emptying at a corner, a low patch of yard, or a snowbank shoveled off the driveway onto the foundation. Fixing that source is often part of the answer.

Is water from a floor drain a leak repair job?

Usually not. Water coming up a floor drain points to a sewer backup. Report it to Pure Waters at a City or Chili, NY address, or to your town's public works or sewer office elsewhere. Closing that route afterward is plumbing work for a licensed master plumber with a permit.

Ready to Stop the Leak?

Any visit and any repair come from the independent contractor, never from this site. Say on the form which wall gets wet and whether rain or melting snow sets it off; one local contractor will then be in touch to see it and price the fix. Going ahead or not is up to you. A few lines on the form are enough to start.
